Household Hazardous Waste

The City of Rio Vista conducts two household hazardous waste event each year, one in the spring and one in the fall, to help residents dispose of their household hazardous waste correctly.  These events are held at our corporation yard which is located at 789 St. Francis Way.  HHW will only be accepted during Our Scheduled Events.  Rio Vista Sanitation customers will be notified in their Sanitation bill and a flyer for the event is included in Water/Sewer bills prior to any upcoming events.

The events are free to Rio Vista residents who have a current sanitation service. For residents without sanitation service there is a $15 fee.

Many common products that we use in our daily lives contain potentially hazardous ingredients and require special care when disposed of. It is illegal to dispose of hazardous waste in the garbage, down storm drains, or onto the ground. Chemicals in illegally or improperly disposed hazardous waste can be released into the environment and contaminate our air, water, and possibly the food we eat. And by throwing hazardous waste in the garbage, you can cause additional hazards to your garbage handler.

Regulations to protect public health and the environment have been changing. This is because we now know that some common items that have traditionally been thrown in your household’s or small business’ trash cannot be safely disposed in landfills.

Hazardous Waste Event Notice

For the past 10 years, the City of Rio Vista has provided Household Hazardous Waste Events for our residents every spring and fall for disposing paints, florescent light bulbs, batteries and other hazardous items that need to be recycled or disposed of properly.  Unfortunately, this year, we were only able to provide a springtime event.  The contract that we have had with Veolia for the collection and destruction/recycling of the hazardous wastes recently expired.  As soon as the contract is amended, finalized and executed, we will be scheduling the next event.  Once scheduled, there will be flyers in your monthly utility bill from the City and your sanitation bill from Mt. Diablo Resource Recovery – Rio Vista.   It will also be published in the Rio Vista Beacon, on this  website and the City of Rio Vista Facebook page and Next Door.  We apologize for any inconvenience this may be causing our residents.
